The concept of democracy has evolved over time, from its origins in ancient Greece to modern liberal democracies characterized by representative government, rule of law, and protection of individual rights and freedoms. In the 21st century, democracy faces a range of challenges, including rising populism, erosion of trust in democratic institutions, and threats to media freedom and civil liberties. Authoritarian regimes and illiberal democracies also pose challenges to the spread of democratic values and norms globally. Addressing these challenges requires renewed commitment to democratic principles, strengthening democratic institutions, and promoting civic engagement and political participation.
