Current social justice movements like Black Lives Matter and #MeToo have deep historical roots in struggles for civil rights, racial justice, and gender equality. The Black Lives Matter movement traces its origins to the long history of systemic racism and police violence against Black communities in the United States, dating back to slavery and Jim Crow segregation. Similarly, the #MeToo movement builds on decades of activism against sexual harassment and gender-based violence, inspired by earlier feminist movements and grassroots organizing. By understanding the historical context of these movements, we can appreciate the ongoing fight for social justice and equality and work towards meaningful change.
