The tides are caused by the gravitational forces exerted by the moon and the sun on Earth’s oceans. High tides occur when the gravitational pull of the moon and sun align, creating bulges of water on opposite sides of the Earth, while low tides occur in between these bulges. Factors that influence the intensity and timing of tides include the positions of the moon and sun relative to Earth, the shape of coastlines and ocean basins, and meteorological conditions like storms and atmospheric pressure.
